Panga LaWende – the wheelchair workshop

This facility was opened on 2nd January 1999 and is located on the site of the AMPO orphanage for boys. Those with physical handicaps can repair their wheelchairs for a modest fee under the expert supervision of Edouard Norgho and Issouf, his assistant. Edouard Norgho uses a wheelchair himself and is a former Paralympics champion of Burkina Faso. He knows exactly what physically handicapped people need and with his courage and joie de vivre he is also a perfect role model.

People with handicaps can apply to AMPO for a wheelchair. When the application is assessed and their need recognized the application is approved. Sometimes there is a long waiting period, because the money to finance the wheelchair is not always immediately available. This is financed from specific purpose-related donations from Germany. As soon as someone sponsors a wheelchair, it is given to the person in need in Ouagadougou.

AMPO also pays school fees for handicapped schoolchildren in addition to providing their first wheelchair, opening the way to school for these children.

Handicap Mobile – the mobile wheelchair workshop

Since more and more people became aware of the AMPO wheelchair workshop, a mobile workshop was founded in January 2008. There was an increasing number of enquiries for wheelchairs from the surrounding villages, and now Edouard Norgho together with an AMPO driver visits villages within a 170 km radius of Ouagadougou in the „Cinémobile“ van. They assess the needs of the handicapped on site and try to improve their situation. In many cases the physically handicapped in the villages are much worse off than those in the city, since they have to cope with greater distances in daily life. The mobile workshop provides mainly physically challenged children with a wheelchair, or provides expert assistance to repair existing wheelchairs in the usual way, offering spare parts at 25% of the market price. Each child who is given an AMPO wheelchair is also provided with free schooling. The project operates with three deployments per month. During these deployments the AMPO workshop remains open, managed by Issouf, Edouard’s assistant.
